Top Hat Word & Index is a technical communications company out of the Seattle area, and registered as a sole proprietorship in the State of Washington...however our reach is international.

Through every phase of your project, Paul is involved. Other staff are brought in primarily as editors and work as-needed for selected projects on a collaborative level with Paul.

Paul provides approximately 20 years of professional technical communications and writing experience, part of which involves a career as an urban planning professional. He specializes in indexing for books, technical documents, and ebooks. All projects are welcome.
Paul served mainly small communities and towns from that of staff planner to a Community Development Director in Arizona and the state of Washington. He spearheaded numerous projects including authoring and editing a wide variety of planning documents.
These technical communications were not only designed to reflect the vision of communities, but served as consensus-building tools to inform citizens, developers, public officials, decision-makers, and agencies at various levels of government. By coaching these various stakeholders, Paul helped to empower communities as they shaped the planning visions of their future.
Paul takes on technical writing projects that involve environmental and town planning today. The combination of his planning background, education, writing experience, technology background, travel experience, and wide range of personal interests provides Paul with a broad palette from which to work as a technical writer, indexer, and editor. Paul earned his Bachelor of Arts in Geography and in the Master of Environmental Planning program at Arizona State University. He augments his technical writing background with certificates in granstmanship from the University of Arizona, a Certificate in Technical Writing and Communication from Bellevue College, and completion of The Graduate School (USDA) Basic Indexing course (which is anything but basic).

Kristin applies a dynamic background in English to her editing, writing, and research roles.
As the Editor-in-Chief -- with over a decade of experience as an education professional with National Board certification for professional teaching standards (NBCT) -- her attention to detail brings an added layer of quality control to the staff. Her critical eye ensures the highest quality deliverable to the client. Kristin also specializes in writing children's books. Many of Kristin's projects may be found in the technical writing and editing pages.
Kristin received her Bachelor of Arts in English at the University of Oregon and her Master of Curriculum and Instruction at Seattle Pacific University.

Lynn brings an extensive background in editing and English to the table; over 40 years of experience as an education professional, medical professional, business owner, editor, tutor, and a young women's mentor at the University of Washington.
Lynn is brought in as-needed to assist with projects involving high volume or quick turnaround. Her attention to detail brings an added layer of quality control to the staff, ensuring the highest quality deliverable to the client.
Lynn received her Bachelor of Arts in English at the University of Washington and her Masters in Nursing at the same university.

The staff of Top Hat Word & Index believe in a career -- and life -- of continuous learning and professional development.
Lynn continues her mentoring role at the University of Washington. Kristin just earned her National Board Certification in teaching (NBCT) this year. Paul looks to receive his second technical communications certificate in Document Design from Bellevue College, and is considering The Graduate School (USDA) Applied Indexing course in 2011, which is the follow-up to the previous course.
In addition, technologies are always evolving...so staff stay current on the latest software programs and wide array of tools available for indexing, technical writing, editing, document design, and information services.
